TFS2012: Backup Databases

A Couple of the tools that have been added with TFS installation are the TFSBackup and the TFSRestore Tools. These tools are not shown in the TFS Admin Console. They are available in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Team Foundation Server 11.0\Tools folder. The tools comes with TFS2012 and TFS2012 Express.

Microsoft has done a good job documenting the usage of the tool. You can visit the following link to learn more about it:

Two things I don’t like about the tfsbackup tool

  • You can’t run it silently. It takes the instance name and the backup folder as parameters if you are using the command line but it will still launch the GUI
  • The backup files don’t contain the date and time part of the file name. In other words, you need to either overwirte the previous backup files or move them before you can do another back to the same folder

The TFS 2012 power tools comes with a backup utility that will be discussed in a later post.
